11/18 & 12/2 Self Evaluation Genesis Quezada

For both weeks I give myself a 9 because we got everything needed for our project and finished it. We got pictures that show how gross our food really is and prepared for our capstone presentation. Our poster I would say was a big success because I think it really conveyed our message.

Cafeteria Food? We'd Rather Go Hungry! Final review

Our project is titled Cafeteria Food? We'd Rather go hungry!

Our greatest  succes was finding Mimie White from Baylor College of Medicine because we got her to do a food study on our cafeteria food but at the same time it was the hardest challenge we had because she is a busy person and we had to fit into her busy schedule.

We learned more developing contries have better food than us like France and Italy but less developed countries like Kenya unfortunately don't.

We learned about ourselves that when we put enough effort in our work we can succeed in anything.

With the information that we have provided to other students we hope they take action and continue to strive for better cafeteria food.

Overall we had fun finding so much interesting information about our topic as well as learning from it more than we did. We struggled and stressed but in the end we feel like our project was a success!

Cafeteria Food ? We'd rather go hungry!
By: Genesis Quezada and Daisy Flores

When people think of cafeteria food, one thinks nasty, unappetizing, greasy food. You think, how can they serve us this and thinks it’s safe for us to eat?  Cafeteria food used to be cooked on school site, but now it is shipped from another state, where the only thing that has to be done to the food is heated up. This can leave the food unhealthy, undercooked, or overcooked, building up many harmful illnesses. Unhealthy cafeteria food can cause food borne illnesses & obesity if not changed. It’s a more serious issue than we think. Our purpose is to change cafeteria food in a healthy way by trying to get a salad bar or something simple as providing water for the students, anything is better than what we already have. We invite Amy White .We made flyers to hand out to the audience when presenting. These flyers consit of steps on how to donate money to saladbars2schools.org.When reached the goal of 125,000 dollars all HISD schools will receive salad bars.

Not every school cafeteria food is the same in the world. But every country has the same goal and concept as us, to try to provide a healthy good tasting lunch to the students. Unfortunately, some countries are doing a better job than others. According to website http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4298245.stm the article "Schools Dinners Around The Wrold" says "France is viewed as a country where food is their national religion," school meals are their main interest since obesity in children under the age of 15 is rising. Their schools provide the students with a nutritionist who also works with the parents, to ensure that the meals provided are a healthy balanced diet. The French believe that good eating habits should start early. So there is no issue of children preferring pizza over something healthy such as fish. The school lunches are simply an adult menu served in children portion sizes. One example of a menu in a primary school is a grapefruit, followed by grilled chicken with green beans, then rice pudding for dessert. Their snack is a tangerine. Potato chips are only offered once a week, but are usually accompanied by salmon lasagna rather than a burger. If they serve pizza it will always be served with a healthy green salad. Every meal is served with water rather than a soft drink or milk. Even though the French schools offer healthy meals, they will probably make poor choices outside of school. For this reason, the French government commission has made healthy eating a main priority that primary schools offer nutrition classes to teach children the lessons about healthy eating.

Cafeteria food is a global issue, something people don’t seem to understand. Acording to the website "http://www.kingcounty.gov/healthservices/health/news/2011/11101002.aspx?print=1" the article "Exciting , healthy changes underway for school meals" claims that "about one in five school-age children in King County are overweight or obese, increasing their of risk serious health problems, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol." Since 1980, the rate of overweight children nationwide has doubled, and the rate of overweight teens has tripled. In an effort to combat this trend, Public Health - Seattle & King County funded five school districts to improve nutrition standards as part of Communities Putting Prevention to Work, a federally-funded campaign to fight obesity and tobacco use, two of the leading causes of death in King County.

But what about our school? Our district? It looks like others are receiving good change but we aren’t! The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed changes to school meal standards that would add more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat milk to school meals. The proposed rule would double the amount of fruits and increase the amount of grains by 80 percent for school breakfasts. Officials further proposed increasing fruits and vegetables by nearly four half-cup servings each week for school lunches. The Agriculture Department’s other proposed requirements include: Decreasing the amount of starchy vegetables like  white potatoes, corn, lima beans and green peas  to one cup a week. Offering pasteurized, 100 percent fruit juice, reducing the amount of sodium in school meals by 25-50 percent over the next 10 years. Establishing average calorie content for meals offered to each age/grade group that would fall within the minimum and maximum calorie levels set by the National Academies’ Institute of Medicine. Hopefully, what they say is true because we need change, it isn’t as hard as it seems, little changes could lead to big changes like offering only fat-free flavored or unflavored milk or unflavored 1 percent milk, using food products and ingredients with zero grams of trans fat. Under the proposed rule, school cafeterias would have weekly requirements for dark green and orange vegetables and legumes. Employees would also be required to serve food with less than 10 percent of its total calories from saturated fat.

All Compared To Our Food Here in The US

Changes that should be made!

we should be offer international food
                                                                    fresh vegetables!
                                                                       fresh fruits!

                                                             provided wih a salad bar!!
more fresh and variaties of choices!
This is an actual kitchen from Wayland High school. So why cant we have the same privalage!?

We are trying to make a difference and add a salad bar to our school. A salad bar is a self-serve station where students can select from variaties of fruits to make a reimbursable meal because they also provide meat or meat alternates, breads, grains and milk. With a salad bar you can have either an entrĂ©e salad bars or theme bars. Theme salad bars include potato bars, soup and salad bars, salad and sandwich bars, and potato and salad bars. Three categories of salad bars comprise part of reimbursable meals: side salad bars, self-serve fruit bars, and assorted self-serve raw vegetables. But what if we can’t get the salad bar? Well, some schools offer off-campus during lunch. This is both a good and a bad choice made by the principles. The pros off this decision are that students get their own choice of the food they want to eat. They also get the choice to go home and eat a freshly home cooked meal. However, many students prefer to eat fast food since their parents are working. Another way to help the student body is by providing a menu of the week’s lunch with nutrition data. That way if a student does not like the meal offered they may bring lunch from home. The students learn the amount of calories or sugar is being offered. We can also raise money to buy a stove to install in our school kitchen since the school kitchen does not have a stove. We can also try to change the menu a little and propose to have an international lunch. Since, we are an international school we think we should be offered an international school lunch. For example, one week or month we should be offered Chinese food such as: wonton miso soup, spinach and Chinese cabbage in almond paste, soybeans, rice, and milk. Bottom line is, if no changes are made to the school cafeteria lunch that is provided to us every day, our health will be in danger!

11/10/11 Self Evaluation (Genesis Quezada)

This week I give myself a 9 because we talked to our sponsor and came up with some ideas that can draw attention to our project. We also found out that our HISD trustee is Greg Meyers. We are planning to contact him and pitch our idea of better cafeteria food. Hopefully, we can try and make an appointment with him to discuss these ideas, or we will ask students to make letters out to him.

11/04 self evaluation (Genesis Quezada)

I give myself a 9 this week because this week Daisy and I started making posters that could possibly raise awareness in the school. We also came up with some fundraising ideas we could do to raise money for the salad bar we are trying to get for the school.

10/27 Self-Evaluation (Genesis Quezada)

I give myself a 9 this week. This week we worked on the corrections we needed to do for our reserach paper. Also, while Daisy was working on the MLA citations, I was looking in to trying to contact our HISD board member, and possibly get students to write letters on our opinion on school lunches and how we think we can improve it. This way we can all get our opinions out in the open about this matter.

10/21/11 Self Evaluation (Genesis Quezada)

This week, I gave myself a 9. This week we organized our binder. It is much easier to find our information now that our stuff is in the right place. We also cited our sources for our research paper and wrote the bibliography. We talked to our sponsor, Mr. Renner, to help us find a way to raise awareness and raise money for a salad bar.

10/13 Self Evaluation Genesis Quezada.

I give myself a 9 this week. This week Daisy and I completed a draft of our research paper, which helped a lot, because now we feel our research paper will be much easier to do. I also found a very interesting article that says our schools have failed to provide us with water. I hope to investigate more with this, and asking the cafeteria manager myself to see if this is true.

Self-Evaluation 10/7 Genesis Quezada

I give myself a 9 this week. This week we got our thoughts together and constructed a draft of our outline. We then officially made an outline, to have a glimpse of what our research paper will look like. We assigned each other a part of the research paper we will write, so that the work is divided in half, and not left to just one person. We feel confident with our outline and research that we can write a 8-10 research paper.

9/23 & 9/28 self- evaluation reflection (Genesis Quezada)

The week of 9/23 I give myself an 9. I give myself an 8 because I did alot of research on the topic and do the one-pager for our project. I was able to find the certain diseases we might get from cafeteria food, and how much our countries food differ from other countries. With the research I found, I was able to have an idea on how our research paper will go. I was able to put all our informaton together and have a research paper draft.

The week of 9/28 we went to the library. Daisy and I put in all the information we had gathered up from the week and we assigned who was doing what. We split up the work 50/50 and we got to outline the draft we made. Fot the outline, I will be doing the introduction, how our project is local, and information over HISD, cafeteria food, its history and nutrition facts. For that week I give myself an 9.

self evaluations (daisy flores) 9/9-12/2

9/9
I  give myself an eight for the week. For the reason being that i did my half which is researching about our subject for most of the period. I spoke to the secretary in the office and she gave me the number tothe hisd food industry. We plan on contacting them to speak about the future changes to our school lunch. Such as adding a salad bar .

9/16
For this week i give myself an eight as well. I found one of the two books that we needed for our capstone. while we interviewed the manager in the cafeteria i wrote down some important information. unfortunately today i had to go to the doctor and missed a class period thus making me behind in our research. I will however make everything up the rest of the week.

9/23
I give myself a nine.I typed our partner contract and added some more to it like that we would both respect each other .We went to the library to continue our research in a quiet place. France has a very nutritious meal compared to us. When the students are served pizza  their side order is a salad with grapefruit and water. While as in the U.S when we are served pizza it is accompanied by french fries,a brownie,an apple and milk.

9/28
I give my self a nine.We combined our research together and created a rough draft of our outline. We decided to split the work. She will do four paragraphs  while i do the other four. Im going to type about how it is global, changes being made, changes trying to apply, risks that could happen if this does not change. We did this so that we follow our partner contract(contract states that we do equal work) and the paper is finished faster.

10/7
i give myself an eight. After we decided who is writing what in the research paper we started writing the outline. I typed it out afterwards and added a few helpful in formation in the paragraph that  was assign for me and corrected a few grammar mistakes. I've started typing on the first paragraph that was assign to me.
It is about how it is global. The cafeteria food is not the same in every country some don't even have a lunch program. Such as Mexico, they allow their students to leave the campus to go home and eat a home cook meal.

10/14
i give myself a 9. Genesis and I started right away with our rough draft after we completed our outline. Thanks to our outline it became easier to work. Since we spilt the essay it also made it easier. I found a website that helped a better understanding of what is a healthy school lunch. the website is www.choosemyplate.gov.  Apparently our school doesn't meet those requirements. they either don't offer not enough vegetables or grains.

10/21
I give myself a 9 for this week. We organized our binder and i must say looks nice. We also cited our work since we had forgotten that in our research paper. I spoke to you this week on ideas for our project. Thank you so much . We are going to make flyers that say information on salad bars to influence people to donate money so HISD can receive salad bars. We plan on posting these flyers in restaurants that have a salad bars such as cici's.

10/27
I give myself a nine this week.We both corrected our research paper by fixing some spelling  mistakes and adding some extra information. I worked on the MLA citation for our research paper. I had to  re- learn how do to one since I forgot how,but it went pretty well . Genesis spoke with Mr. Khalil and he gave us a great idea to speak with the HISD board member. Hopefully we can contact her and change the school lunches for the better.

11/4
I give myself an eight this week. We started to make  a poster to raise awareness. We plan on making at least three. We are also planing on making some fundraising to donate to the salad bar company.Since we dont think people will be willing to donate money themselves.

11/11
I give myself a 8.5 this week. We began to take pictures of the food the school provides us. We actually received pizza the whole week. The whole week! This really made me concern on the food they provide us with. Our friend actually received a burned burger! Every picture we took is gross. We plan on posting these pictures on our blog.

11/18
I give myself a 9 this week. We felt that pictures isn't enough to show our audience how gross the food the school serve us is.So we decided to make a video where we  interview  students. We would ask these students on their thoughts about the food. We were lucky enough to interview a teacher . We also plan on posting this video on our blog.

12/2
This week i give myself a 9 . We spent the whole week preparing for capstone night. We did extra research so that we can answer any question our audience asks us. We did our best on posting allot of visual on our tri fold board. Unfortunantly we could only get one picture of the actual food we receive at school. Capstone night was long an intense but overall  it was an awesome experience.

self- evaluation 9/9 & 9/16 Reflection (Genesis Quezada)

On the first week, 9/9, we found out the head of the food services is Aramak, we got their number and we plan and calling them to see if there is something we can do that might alter the cafeteria food is some way. I give myself an 8 that week for the fact that I got to plan what our next step will be and get our thoughts straight

Second week, 9/16, was productive. Not only did I get one of the books we needed, but I also got to talk to the manager if the cafeteria and ask a few questions of my own. We then receive some help from Mrs. Nash and found more research like how much salt or sugar our food contains. I also found out we can apply to this website and we can try to get a salad bar. For this week I give myself a 9. Because i found very useful information about not only cafeteria food services, but also with some food borne illness we might get from cafeteria food not being properly prepared.
